Website down checker: is it down for everyone or just you?

A website down checker requests the page from an outside server and reports the HTTP status code, response time and DNS result, so you know whether the site is down for everyone or only on your network. Our free tool is in early access.

Check if a website is down

The tool is in early access. Leave the website you want to check and your email, and we will let you know when it opens.

How to check if a website is down

  1. 01

    Request from outside

The checker sends a request to the URL from its own server, not from your device or network.

  2. 02

    Read the status

It records the HTTP status code, the response time and whether the domain resolves in DNS.

  3. 03

    Compare with your result

If the site responds for the checker but not for you, the problem is on your side: browser cache, network, DNS or a blocked IP address.

Main reasons a website goes down

Most outages come from a short list: the hosting server is overloaded or restarting, a plugin or code update breaks the site, the domain or SSL certificate expires, DNS records were changed by mistake, or a firewall blocks real visitors along with bots. A website can also be up but unreachable from one country or provider because of routing problems or local blocks.

Does downtime affect SEO? A short outage rarely changes rankings. If search engines keep getting server errors for days, they crawl the site less and may drop pages from results. AI crawlers that fetch your pages for answers face the same errors.

Website downtime monitoring instead of manual checks

A one-time check answers the question right now. To find out about an outage before your customers do, use a website down monitor.

Live

Alerts in Telegram

Rankmetr monitoring checks the site on a schedule and sends an alert when it stops responding.

Live

SSL and domain expiry

The same monitor warns you before the certificate or the domain expires. See the SSL checker.

Technical audit

Server errors and broken pages also appear in the SEO checker.

FAQ

How do I know if a website is down for everyone or just me?

Check it from an outside server. If the checker gets a normal response and you do not, the problem is your browser, network or DNS.

What if the website is up but I cannot open it?

Clear the browser cache, try another browser or mobile data, flush DNS and disable VPN or extensions. Your IP address may also be blocked by the site firewall.

Does a website being down affect SEO rankings?

Short outages usually do not. Long or repeated server errors make search engines crawl less and can push pages out of the results.

What is website uptime?

It is the share of time a site responds normally. Uptime monitoring measures it by checking the site on a schedule and recording every failure.

How often should I check my website status?

Automatically, every few minutes. Manual checks only catch problems you already suspect.

How do I prevent website downtime?

Use reliable hosting, renew the domain and SSL certificate on time, test updates before release, keep backups and set up monitoring with alerts.
